Description: Tufted herb.
Leaves subterete, 30–90 cm long, c. 1 mm diam.; sheathing base 7–17 cm long, deep red to black, shiny.
Scapes terete or 3- or 4-angled, 30–70 cm long, smooth. Inflorescence ovoid to broad-ovoid, 12–19 mm long, 10–12 mm diam. Sterile bracts 16–20, loosely packed, lower ones reflexed at base. Fertile bracts obovate; central region brown; wings black, crisped, recurved; margins apically lacerate. Lateral outer tepals broad-obovate, papillate; central region blackish brown, keel slightly developed; wings equal, brown; margins apically lacerate. Style 5–10 mm long; branches 0.8–1.5 mm long.
Seeds oblong, c. 1.3 mm long.
Flowering: late spring to summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in damp or swampy areas, often in heath; chiefly from Mt Coricudgy to the Budawang Range and Little Forest, and inland to Blackheath.
