Description: Herb 1 m high, stems very finely pubescent; stems with rigid, 3-pronged spines c. 8–20 mm long at base of leaves.
Leaves lanceolate, 2–4 cm long, 3–10 mm wide, divided into linear segments, surfaces grey, very finely pubescent, lamina with 3 prominent veins; petiole 5–10 cm long.
Heads inconspicuous. Burrs ellipsoid, 4–8 mm long, with long fine hooked spines, c. 2 mm long, sometimes with a short terminal spine.
Flowering: summer–autumn.
Distribution and occurrence: Weed of pastureland, naturalized in the Jerilderie area. Native of S Amer.
