Walwhalleya pungens (Wills & J.J.Bruhl) Wills & J.J.Bruhl APNI* Description: Stoloniferous perennials to c. 50 cm tall.
Culms sparingly to copiously branched. Sheaths glabrous; auricles absent; ligule membranous, 0.7–1.9 mm long, erose or entire; blade involute, 1.9–3 mm wide, glabrous, scabrous, with a pungent tip.
Inflorescence fully exserted at maturity, main axis 3–30 cm long; primary branches spreading; secondary branches spreading; spikelets 1–6 on a primary branch, loosely arranged but more towards the ends of branches. Spikelets 3–3.7 mm long. Lower glume 60–90% spikelet length, 2–2.3 mm long, 3–5(–7)-nerved, acute; upper glume 2.9–3.5 mm long, 7—9-nerved, acute. Lower lemma 2.8–3.3 mm long, sterile, 7–9-nerved; palea vestigial, cleft. Fertile lemma 2.5–2.9 mm long, indurate, rounded on the back, apiculate; palea notched at the apex, with a shallow depression near tip.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in woodlands on soils derived from serpentinite.
