Description: Tufted annual to 0.6 m high.
Leaves with ligule membranous, to 0.5 mm long, obtuse, erose; blade inrolled, lower surface glabrous, upper surface pubescent with hairs < 0.25 mm on prominent ribs.
Inflorescence 1-sided, 3–17 cm long (excluding awns), to 2.5 cm wide (excluding awns), exserted at maturity. Spikelets 1–18 mm long (excluding awns), c. 0.5 mm wide (excluding awns); florets 5–7, proximal 2 or 3 florets female, distal 2–5 florets male; Lower glume 7–30% length of upper, 1–4 mm long, subulate, awnless, smooth, glabrous; upper 10–14 mm long, tapering to an awn, smooth or scabrous, glabrous, awn straight, 1–15 mm long, scabrous. Male lemmas smaller and narrower than female lemmas. Female lemmas 8–13 mm long, tapering to awn, central nerve scabrous; awn straight, 18–26 cm long, scabrous; palea subequal to lemma.
Flowering: spring.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows on coastal sand dunes; sporadic south from Bundeena. Native of Eur.
