Description: Erect annual to 1 m high.
Leaves with sheath with tubercle-based hairs; ligule densely ciliate, 1–2 mm long; blade 7–23 mm wide, softly pubescent on both surfaces, margins sometimes undulate.
Inflorescence of 2–10 racemes to 10 cm long; spikelets somewhat crowded. Spikelets 5–6 mm long, contracted into a short stipe-like base, shortly pilose. Lower glume 50–60% the length of the spikelet, abruptly contracted into a stipe-like base, 5–9-nerved; upper glume apiculate, 7-nerved. Lower lemma male, apiculate, 5-nerved; palea almost as long as the lemma. Fertile lemma c. 4 mm long, shortly stipitate, apiculate, moderately coarsely rugulose, the rupture lines distinct; palea almost as long as, and similar in texture and marking to the lemma.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: A weed of cultivation. Native of C Amer.
