Urochloa gilesii (Benth.) Hughes APNI* Synonyms: Brachiaria gilesii (Benth.) Chase APNI*
Description: Loosely tufted annual to 1 m high.
Leaves with blade to 3–16 mm wide, with sparse tubercle-based hairs, margins often undulate, thickened and whitish.
Inflorescence of up to 10 racemes 4–9 cm long, sometimes the lower with a few short branches, bearing distant spikelets singly or sometimes in pairs. Spikelets 5–6.5 mm long, constricted into a short stipitate base, pubescent. Lower glume c. 50% as long as the spikelet, constricted and grooved around the stipe, sparsely pubescent or glabrous, adaxial, mostly 7–11-nerved; upper glume stipitate, prominently 7–9-nerved. Lower lemma similar to the upper glume, prominently 5–7-nerved; palea present. Fertile lemma striate-rugulose, constricted into a broad stipe-like base, c. 4 mm long, not mucronate.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Usually grows on disturbed ground.
