Description: Caespitose perennials to c. 1.5 m tall. Culms erect, ribbed, glabrous; nodes glabrous.
Sheaths tightly enclosing culm, ribbed, glabrous, margin often ciliate with hairs <0.5 mm long; ligule a ciliate rim with hairs <0.25 mm long, upper ligules often with hairs to 1 mm long at each end; blade 8–30 cm long, to 8 mm wide, ribbed, glabrous, lower margin often ciliate with hairs to 1 mm long.
Inflorescence paniculate, 25–40 cm long, to 3 cm wide, panicle often narrow before flowering, branches erect, stiff, ususally spreading at maturity; central axis ribbed, glabrous; rachis occasionally scabrous; pedicels 0.25–1 mm long, glabrous, scabrous. Spikelets 1.5–2 mm long, dark green, floret 1. Lower glume oblong to lanceolate, c. 0.5 mm long, obtuse, ± erose, 1-nerved, hyaline; upper glume elliptic, c. 1 mm long, obtuse or acute, ± erose, 1-nerved, minutely scabrous. Lemma lanceolate, c. 2 mm long, acute, 1-nerved, minutely scabrous; palea lanceolate to ovate, 2 mm long, truncate or 2-lobed, 3-nerved, sometimes splitting along central nerve, minutely scabrous.
Flowering: Flowers in summer.
Distribution and occurrence: A weed of pasture and native areas, especially on poor soils.
