Description: Tufted perennials to 1.4 m high.
erect, ribbed, glabrous; nodes ribbed, glabrous. Sheaths tightly enclosing culm, ribbed, glabrous, upper margin ciliate with hairs to 0.5 mm long; ligule a ciliate rim with hairs <0.5 mm long; blade, 10–50 cm long, to 8 mm wide, ribbed, glabrous, margin usually ciliate with hairs to 1 mm long.
Inflorescence paniculate, open, 19–45 cm long, to 3.5 cm wide, panicle often narrow before flowering, branches lax, usually spreading at maturity; rachis ribbed, glabrous; with a distinct spikelet-free zone at the base of the branches; pedicels 0.5–2 mm long, glabrous. Spikelets 1.5–2 mm long, dark green, florets 1. Lower glume lanceolate to elliptic, 0.5–1 mm long, acute or obtuse, hyaline; upper glume lanceolate, 1–1.5 mm long, acute, 1-nerved, minutely scabrous. Lemma lanceolate 1.5–2 mm long, acute, 1-nerved, minutely scabrous; palea lanceolate to ovate, 1.5–2 mm long, apex notched or obtuse, faintly 2-nerved, minutely scabrous.
Flowering: Flowers in summer.
Distribution and occurrence: THIS SPECIES PROBABLY DOES NOT GROW IN AUSTRALIA; material previously identified as this species is mostly Sporobolus sessilis.
