Salix x rubens Schrank APNI*
Description: Spreading tree to 16 m high with a depressed-globose crown, broader than high; twigs from olive-green, brown to orange-yellow or dark red, erect or drooping, moderately fragile; buds brown ± glabrous or silky.
Leaves narrow-lanceolate, 5.5–18.5 cm long, 15–45 mm wide, silky, becoming glabrous and lustrous green above, glabrous and glaucous or glabrescent below, margins glandular-toothed; stipules 2–9 mm long.
Catkins terminal on short leafy lateral branches; male catkins spreading or ± erect; 6–8 cm long, female catkins pendent to 8 cm or more long.
Capsules 4–5 mm long.
Distribution and occurrence: A very serious environmental weed, currently regenerating from seed in Australian rivers. Often growing in riverbeds with the base of the tree buried under river sediment and showing numerous upright stems. Originating from Europe

A hybrid between S. alba var. vitellina and S. fragilis var. fragilis. The Australian Plant Census (CHAH 2010; accessed May 2017) treats this taxon as a synonym of Salix x fragilis.
