Description: Tufted mostly glabrous annual to 0.6 m high.
Leaves with ligule < 1 mm long, membranous, ciliate or glabrous; blade 2–4 mm wide.
Inflorescence 1–7 cm long, densely crowded, spikelets pale-green to purplish; pedicels 0.3–1 mm long. Spikelets c. 3 mm long, curved, glabrous or hairy. Lower glume much shorter than spikelet, 3–7-nerved, soft with a hyaline apex; upper subequal to spikelet, 7–11-nerved, curved and inflated at base, apex and margins hyaline, glabrous or with scattered, tubercle-based hairs. Lower lemma equal to upper glume, 7-nerved, glabrous or with tubercle-based hairs. Upper lemma much shorter than spikelet, obscurely 5-nerved, margins involute. Paleas 1 or 2, lower minute or absent, the upper subequal to lemma.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in moist places, particularly in mud of freshwater swamps; north from Ulludulla.
