Description: Erect perennial with tuberous roots, somewhat succulent stems without axillary branches.
Leaves lanceolate, 6–30 cm long, apex acuminate, base cuneate, fleshy.
Flower whorls close together. Fruiting valves 10–15 mm long, delicate, without teeth; callosities absent. Sometimes cultivated; roots used in the tanning industry.
Distribution and occurrence: Sporadically naturalized and formerly cultivated, but no recent records. Native of N & C Amer.
