Description: Shrub or perennial herb, mostly 60–100 cm high, often woody at the base, not semisucculent.
Leaves ovate to oblong or lanceolate, 6–10 cm long, 2–4 cm wide; petiole 10–30 mm long.
Racemes elongating to 5–10 cm long in fruiting stage; pedicels 2–4 mm long. Perianth segments c. 2 mm long, white or pinkish, turning green.
Berry globose, c. 3 mm diam., red, usually 1-seeded.
Flowering: spring to summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows chiefly near the coast north from Wingham, in or on the margins of rainforest, often common in lowland subtropical rainforest where it can become weedy; also found in dry rainforest as far inland as Hillgrove gorge. Native of S Amer.

This species is sometimes confused with Deeringia amaranthoides (Amaranthaceae), a native species of similar habit and habitat, but usually with 5-merous flowers and 2 or more seeds per fruit.
