Common name: Spider Mangrove, Red Mangrove, Stilt-rooted Mangrove
Rhizophora stylosa Griff. APNI* Description: Small tree with numerous branched stilt roots.
Leaves obovate to elliptic, 6–14 cm long, 3–8 cm wide, with a caducous mucro, thick, glossy and glabrous, lower surface usually spotted with reddish corky dots; petiole 1–3.5 cm long; stipules 2–4 cm long.
Inflorescences 2–8-flowered; peduncle 1–3 cm long; pedicels 5–10 mm long. Calyx 12–15 mm long. Corolla 8–12 mm long, greenish cream, villous along margins.
Fruit 2–4 cm long; viviparous seedling usually 20–50 cm long before falling.
Flowering: most of year.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in saline mud in river estuaries; rare in N.S.W., north from South West Rocks.
