Description: Emergent aquatic perennial herb, rhizomatous. Stems terete, up to 3 m long; turions recorded.
Stipules convolute. Submerged leaves petiolate; blade lanceolate, tapered at base, acute to obtuse at apex, 6–12 cm long, 1.2–3 cm wide. Floating leaves petiolate; blade ovate to roundish, rarely broadly lanceolate, cordate, auriculate to rounded at base, apex obtuse, coriaceous, 4–8 cm long, 3–5.5 cm wide, with 21–35 veins.
Inflorescence a spike, emergent, dense, up to 5 cm long, terminal; peduncle erect, recurved when fruiting.
Fruit laterally compressed, with 3 distinct crenulate keels and prominent beak, 3–3.5 mm long (including beak).
Flowering: in warmer months
Distribution and occurrence: Widespread from the coast to the Western Plains; also in southeastern Qld, Vic, Tas and southeastern SA In permanent waterbodies.

Other Australian states: Qld Vic. S.A. Tas.
This has been confused with P. tricarinatus in the past.
