Description: Shrub 1–4 m high, young stems rusty stellate-tomentose.
Leaves lanceolate to ± oblong to elliptic, 1.5–3 cm long, 5–15 mm wide, margins recurved, ± toothed; upper surface commonly glabrous, sometimes sparsely covered with stiff hairs, not obviously wrinkled between impressed secondary veins; lower surface tomentose with stellate hairs, at least veins rusty.
Flowers yellowish, ± sessile in dense bracteate head-like clusters. Petals absent, or rarely 1 or 2 in some flowers. Sepals not persistent in fruit.
Capsule and hypanthium covered with long rusty hairs over a short whitish or greyish tomentum.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in open forest, woodland or shrubland; chiefly in the ranges, south from Torrington.
