Description: Small to medium-sized tree to 20 m high; bark rough, longitudinally fissured; latex milky, usually present but often sparse in young stems or petioles when cut or broken; buds and young stems with densely brownish T-shaped hairs.
Leaves alternate but often clustered towards end of stems, oblanceolate, 6–15 cm long, 1–5 cm wide, apex rounded or bluntly pointed, base tapering, thin and papery, both surfaces hairless or sparsely hairy, green and shiny, pinnately veined with 10–18 pairs of lateral veins, prominent on both sides, minor veins clearly visible; petiole 5–25 mm long, mostly hairy.
Flowers axillary and often ramiflorous, 4–12-flowered clusters or rarely flowers solitary. Flowers bisexual, 5- or 6-merous. Sepals 5, fused at base. Petals 3–5 mm long, green or whitish. Stamens 5, staminodes 5 and alternating with corolla lobes .
Fruit globose to ovoid, firm-fleshy, 20–30 mm diam., green turning yellow or purplish or black, sometimes distinctly angular, with persistent style at apex and sepals at base, 3–5-seeded. Seeds 1–1.5 cm long, compressded, glossy brown with an elongate whitish scar.
Flowering: Fruit ripe April–July.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in subtropical, littoral and dry rainforest north from the Richmond R., not common.
