Description: Tufted annual to 1.5 m high; culms smooth, rather slender, erect.
Leaves with sheath close around the culms, smooth or striate, the uppermost inflated; ligule membranous, c. 5 mm long; blade flat, 3–11 mm wide, smooth to lightly scabrid.
Panicle dense, cylindrical, 2.5–17 cm long, often partly enclosed in the sheath. Spikelets 2.9–5.5 mm long, densely imbricate. Glumes 2.9–5.5 mm long, usually naviculate at the apex, or shortly and abruptly acute, narrowly winged towards the summit. Sterile florets subequal, acuminate, 30–50% as long as the fertile floret. Fertile lemma 2.2–3.8 mm long, with appressed hairs above, smooth and shining below, rather thin; palea obscurely 2-nerved.
Flowering: spring.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in areas susceptible to flooding. Native of Amer.
