Persicaria filiformis (Thunb. ex Murray) Nakai ex W.T.Lee APNI* Description: Erect perennial herb, rather scabrid-pubescent on all parts, rhizomatous; stems 40–120 cm tall.
Leaves broadly ovate to elliptic, acuminate, with dark blotches on upper surface, 10–16 cm long, 3–8 cm wide; petiole 1–1.5 cm long. Ocreas ciliate.
Inflorescence of long, slender terminal and axillary racemes, to 60 cm long; perianth segments 4, reddish, 2.5–3 mm long, persistent but not much enlarged when fruiting. Stigmas conspicuously tough and persistent, hook-like, on fruit. Style 2-fid.
Achene lenticular, ovate in outline, brown, shining, 2.5–3 mm long, 1.5–2.5 mm diam.
Distribution and occurrence: Naturalised rarely (NC, near Thora). Cultivated as an ornamental. Native to Asia: Himalayas to Korea and Japan. On creekbank.
