Description: Erect rhizomatous and stoloniferous perennials or annuals to 1.6 m high.
Leaves with sheath long-pubescent near the base or glabrous; ligule 2–4 mm long; sometimes hairy near the base.
Inflorescence 9–25 cm long, of 2–7 (usually 2–4) racemes 4.5–13 cm long on a common axis 1.5–17 cm long, the axils dark, shortly pubescent. Racemes bare at the base for up to 3.5 cm. Spikelets pedicellate, solitary, in 2 rows, 2.75–3 mm long. Lower glume absent. Upper glume and sterile lemma similar and equal to the spikelet, 5–7-nerved, sterile lemma transversely or irregularly wrinkled. Fertile floret 2.5–2.75 mm long, papillose-striate.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: A naturalized pasture species; north from Dungog. Native of India & SE Asia.
