Oxalis purpurea L. APNI* Synonyms: Oxalis variabilis Jacq. APNI*
Description: Herb with stem hardly exserted; rhizome to 15 cm long, bulbs ovoid, 1–3.5 cm long, pointed, outer surface blackish brown.
Leaves mostly 5–20, 3-foliolate; stipules abruptly tapering into petiole; petiole 1–7 cm long; leaflets broad-obovate to rhombic, 1–3 cm long, 1–3 cm wide, rounded or sometimes emarginate.
Inflorescences 1-flowered. Petals 15–40 mm long, pink to purple, sometimes white, yellow at base.
Fruit not known in Aust.
Flowering: April–November
Distribution and occurrence: A weed in gardens, along roadsides and cemeteries, probably a garden escape; south from the Sydney region. Native of S Afr.
