Description: Erect annual herb to c. 150 cm high, without basal rosette; stems simple or branched, densely villous and glandular pubescent.
Leaves narrow-lanceolate, 5–15 cm long, usually 5–10 mm wide, margins sparsely toothed, acute.
Flowers in upper leaf axils. Hypanthium to 6–10 cm long, slender. Sepals 25–30 mm long. Petals 20–40 mm long, yellow, becoming reddish with age.
Fruit ± cylindrical, broader in the upper third, 2–4 cm long, 3–4 mm wide, villous, the 4 valves clearly separated at apex.
Flowering: spring–autumn.
Distribution and occurrence: Widely cultivated and naturalized in disturbed sites. Native of S Amer.
