Description: Caespitose perennial to 0.6 m high, base woolly with hairs c. 1 mm long, and thickened.
Leaves with ligule membranous, 1–2 mm long, truncate, erose, often bordered with dense silky hairs 1.5–2.5 mm long; blade flat, often rolled when dry, to 4 mm wide, scabrous, margins hirsute, glabrous or sometimes sparsely hairy.
Inflorescence open, 10–15 cm long, to 2.5 cm wide. Spikelets 11–17 mm long, to 19 mm wide at maturity, florets 3–8; pedicels 3–17 mm long. Glumes subequal, 10–18 mm long, to 0.4 mm wide, widely gaping at maturity, 13-nerved, glabrous. Lemmas 9–12 mm long (including lobes and awn), the back with hairs 0.5–5 mm long, deeply 2-lobed, the lobes 6–8 mm long; awn column twisted, 1.5–2 mm long, bristle straight, 4.5–5 mm long.
Flowering: in response to rain.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in arid grasslands.
