Description: Stem subterranean, 8–20 cm diam.
Leaves 1–6 in crown, 45–100 cm long, rachis strongly spirally twisted; pinnae 80–150, bright green, highly glossy to semi-glossy simple, strongly discolorous; longest pinnae 17–30 cm long; 3–7 mm wide, basal pinnae not reduced to spines; petiole 20–35 mm long.
Male cones 15 cm long, 4.5 cm wide, spines 0.2–1 cm long. Female cones ovoid, 10–16 cm long, 7–11 cm diam.; spines 5–35 mm long; seeds ovoid, 2.4–2.7 cm long, 1.9–2.3 cm wide, red.
Distribution and occurrence: Scattered in sclerophyll forests on siliceous soils from Bulahdelah to Lake Macquarie. Sclerophyll forests on siliceous soils.

This species hybridizes with M. communis on the NC.
