Description: Scabrous perennial to 80 cm high.
Basal leaves 3–10 cm long, 10–30 mm wide, 4–7-lobed, bristly.
Flowering stems 3-winged; each wing 1–3 mm wide, terminal lobe leaf-like, to 50 mm long. Raceme compact; terminal wing 3-toothed; terminal units 2-flowered; inner bract 7 mm long, with 2 or 3 pungent apical spines. Calyx c. 15 mm long, glabrous, bright blue to purplish; tube c. 7 mm long, almost truncate, with 5 very obtuse shallow lobes. Corolla yellowish or pink, purple when dry.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Often cultivated, occasionally naturalized. Native of Europe.
