Description: Straggling, slender annual or perennial to 50 cm high.
Leaves with ligule c. 1 mm long with stiff cilia to 3 mm long; blade lanceolate, 4–8 mm wide.
Inflorescence of 3–6 racemes each 2–6 cm long, arranged digitately or subdigitately on the rachis; raceme internodes 4–7 mm long and the pedicels c. 50% the length of the internodes. Spikelets paired and similar, 1 sessile the other pedicellate; sessile spikelets 3–5 mm long; callus with short hairs. Lower glume 4-nerved, obtuse or 2-toothed; upper 3-nerved, acute. Lower lemma absent or sterile; palea absent. Upper lemma 1.5–2 mm long with an awn 10–18 mm long; palea absent or minute. Pedicellate spikelet similar.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in shady areas on stream banks.
