Juncus usitatus L.A.S.Johnson APNI* 
Description: Shortly rhizomatous perennial, densely tufted. Culms terete, 40–110 cm long, 0.5–1.9 (rarely to 2.3) mm diam., ± soft, mid-green; culm striations 20–40; pith interrupted or occasionally continuous.
Cataphylls 6–18 cm long, ± lax, abaxially golden brown to red-brown at base, adaxially silvery to golden brown.
Inflorescence pseudolateral, diffuse, 2–7 cm long; flowers numerous, solitary; lowest involucral bract 10–28 cm long, longer than inflorescence. Tepals straw-brown, with ± broad hyaline margins; outer tepals 1.3–2.0 (rarely to 2.2) mm long, longer than or equalling inner tepals. Stamens 3 (rarely to 6), shorter than outer tepals; anthers 0.3–0.6 mm long.
Capsule longer than outer tepals, ellipsoid, obtuse, not or scarcely apiculate, golden brown.
Flowering: spring–summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Extending inland to near Dubbo and along the Murray River valley; probably introduced in irrigation areas near Warren, Griffith and Hay. Very common on stream banks and other moist places.
