Juncus acuminatus Michx. APNI* 
Description: Tufted or shortly rhizomatous perennial. Culms terete, 25–60 cm long, 0.9–2.8 mm diam.
Leaves unitubulose, spread along culms, shorter than or occasionally equalling culms; blade terete, 1.2–2.6 mm diam.; auricles 1–3 mm long.
Inflorescence terminal, diffuse, 9–18 cm long; flowers clustered at apex of branches, usually 5–20 per cluster and 5–20 clusters per inflorescence; involucral bract 1, well-developed, 3–9 cm long, much shorter than inflorescence (to half the length of inflorescence). Tepals straw-brown to dark brown, occasionally red-brown towards apex, with narrow to broad hyaline or pale yellow margins; outer tepals 3.0–3.6 (occasionally to 4.0) mm long, longer than or equalling inner tepals. Stamens 3, shorter than outer tepals; anthers 0.4–0.7 mm long. Capsule ± equalling outer tepals, narrow-ovoid, acute, apiculate, golden brown to red-brown or dark brown at least near apex.

Flowering: spring–summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Scattered, recorded at Kempsey, Royal N. Park, Belmore Falls, and Emmaville. Native of N & C Amer. Infrequently naturalized in damp, disturbed situations.

Occasionally proliferating from the flowers.
