Hypolepis tenuifolia (G.Forst.) Bernh. APNI* Description: Rhizome long-creeping, 3–10 mm diam., densely covered with pale brown hairs near the growing apex, elsewhere more scattered hairs becoming red-brown.
Stipe 40–170 cm long, dark chestnut-brown at base, pale chetnut or yellow-brown above, bearing red-brown hairs at very base, replaced by colourless glandular and non-glandular hairs above (which are up to 5 mm long on uncoiling fronds); two dark prominent vertical bands on opposite sides of stipe. Laminae broadly ovate or elliptic, 25–200 cm by 28–140 cm, bipinnate at apex, 4- or 5-pinnate at base. Rachis yellow-brown at base, green at apex, bearing colourless glandular and non-glandular hairs up to 2 mm long. Primary pinnae in 10–30 pairs, opposite or subopposite, the longest at or near the base which is 16–100 cm by 11–50 cm, upper pinnae narrowly ovate to ovate, lower pinnae ovate. Secondary pinnae ovate, 7–35 by 3.5–15 cm, those on the lower pinnae decreasing markedly in length along the pinnae. Tertiary pinnae ovate, 2–17 by 1–6 cm, midrib winged. Quaternary pinnae narrowly ovate, 0.5–3.5 by 0.2–1.2 cm, shallowly incised on smaller specimens, divided into ultimate segments up to 0.6 cm long on larger specimens. Veins reaching margin at a tooth apex, or sometimes ending jus short of margin. Hairs fine colourless glandular and non-glandular hairs densely covering b oth lamina surfaces, veins and midribs but absent from margins, 0.1–0.8 mm long on lamina surface, up to 1 mm long on midribs.
Sori round or ovate, protected from earliest stages by reflexed, incised, rather broad, membranous flaps which bear occasional glandular hairs on the upper surface, 0.5–1.2 mm wide; lacking hairs amongst sproangia.
Spores very pale, perispores of inter-connecting flattened projections, 30–39 by 17–25 microns.
Distribution and occurrence: Disturbed sites in open forest orrainforest, up to 1000 m elevation. Known in NSW by early collections from the Clarence and Hawkesbury Rivers. Not recorded / vouchered recently.
