Hypolepis distans Hook. APNI* Description: Rhizome long-creeping, 1–2.5 mm diameter, abundantly covered in dark red-brown hairs 2–3.5 mm long
Stipes to 30 cm long, 1–1.5 mm diameter, dark brown at base, red-brown below lamina, yellow-brown toward tip of lamina. Lamina narrowly ovate, 40 cm long by 20 cm wide, tripinnate at base, bipinnate at apex, bearing scattered septate, non-glandular hairs on stipe and rhachis, dorsal and ventral lamina surfaces glabrous. Primary pinnae in 20–40 pairs, opposite or subopposite, arising at 90 degrees to rhacis, the longest at or below the middle. Secondary pinnae sessile or shortly stalked. Veins reaching lamina margin at apex of distinct sinus.
Sori round to ovate, marginal, partly covered by or adjacent to a reflexed, incised, membranous indusial flap. Hairs amongst sporangia absent.
Distribution and occurrence: In soils derived from Wianamatta Shale overlying Hawkesbury sandstone within modified Eucalyptus forest in a gully. Currently known from one location at Macquaries Pass but may be more widespread.
