Hyparrhenia filipendula (Hochst.) Stapf APNI* Description: Caespitose perennial to 1.5 m high.
Leaves with sheath glabrous; ligule c. 1 mm long; blade usually 2–3 mm wide, glabrous or hairy towards base.
Panicle 15–90 cm long. Spatheoles c. 4.5–8 cm long, often tinged red. Racemes paired, 1.5–2.5 cm long, the lower subsessile, the upper with a base 7–8 mm long; 1–3 awns per raceme; a pair of similar sterile spikelets at the base of lower raceme, 2 pairs at base of upper. Fertile spikelets 5–8 mm long including the 2 mm callus, hairy or almost glabrous. Lower glume truncate or 2-toothed, 9-nerved; upper 3-nerved. Lower lemma as long as the glumes; upper stipe-like, passing into an awn 4–5 cm long. Pedicellate spikelets male, 6–7 mm long, glabrous or hairy; lower glume produced into a bristle 1–6 mm long; lower lemma 1–3-nerved, upper 1-nerved.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in woodland.
