This species has previously been confused with H. serpyllifolia. See Toelken H.R. (2013) Notes on Hibbertia subg. Hemistemma (Dilleniaceae) 9. The eastern Australian H. vestita group, including H. pedunculata and H. serpyllifolia, J.Adelaide Bot.Gard. 26: 42. H. serpyllifolia is confined to a small area on the central coast of Queensland.
