Description: Shrub or small tree to 6 m high, glabrous.
Leaves elliptic, lanceolate or ovate, mostly 5–17 cm long, 1.5–6 cm wide, apex acuminate to rarely obtuse, margins entire, upper surface dark green, lower surface paler, often with 1–4 pale corky galls; petiole 2–6 mm long.
Flowers solitary or a few in short racemes, sometimes ramiflorous; pedicels to 25 mm long. Sepals c. 1 mm long. Petals 3–7 mm long, reddish.
Capsule ovoid to depressed-globose, 15–25 mm long, 5-valved; seeds 3-angled, c. 8–12 mm long, aril at base and on one side, fleshy.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in subtropical and littoral rainforest, north from Ballina.
