Description: Caespitose rhizomatous perennial to 1.3 m high.
Leaves with sheath closed, later splitting, ribbed, transverse thickenings 0.5–1 mm long visible on drying, glaucous; ligule membranous, subulate or truncate, erose, 4–9 mm long; blade flat, folded or rolled when dry, to 5 mm wide, sometimes splitting along midrib.
Inflorescence racemose, 20–35 cm long, exserted or partially enclosed in uppermost sheath, straight or curved. Spikelets to 3.5 cm long, 8–15 bisexual florets. Glumes membranous, 1-nerved; lower 5–6 mm long, c. 1.5 mm wide, upper 5–6 mm long, c. 2 mm wide. Lemmas linear, 7–11 mm long, subulate, 5-nerved, scabrous, margins membranous. Palea linear, 6–11 mm long, apex 2-toothed or entire, 2-keeled, keels scabrous.
Flowering: spring–summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows along river banks and drainage channels.
