Gladiolus angustus L. APNI*
Description: Herb 30–60 cm high; corm to 15 mm diam., tunic papery.
Basal leaves linear, sword-shaped, 20–60 cm long, 5–8 mm wide, flat; midveins prominent.
Scape rarely branched, with 1 or 2 reduced leaves; spike secund, straight, 2- or 3-flowered; bracts lanceolate, acuminate, 3–6 cm long. Perianth white to cream or pink-flushed; tube funnel-shaped, 4–7 cm long, slightly curved, widened towards mouth; dorsal lobe broad-elliptic to oblong, acute, hooded, 2.5–3.5 cm long; lateral lobes elliptic, slightly shorter; lower 3 lobes elliptic, acute, equal, 1.8–2.8 cm long, each with red-purple mark near centre. Stamens arched under dorsal lobe. Style branches spathulate, 6–7 mm long, level with tips of anthers.
Fruit not seen.

Distribution and occurrence: Naturalized locally in the Sydney area. Native of SW Cape Province, S Afr.
