Gaillardia x grandiflora Van Houtte APNI*
Description: Erect perennial herb to c. 70 cm high, hairy.
Leaves alternate, oblanceolate, irregularly toothed to pinnatifid 4–15 cm long, 6–11 mm wide.
Heads terminal, usually c. 8 cm diam.; peduncles to 18 cm long; involucral bracts usually 3-seriate, lanceolate, densely hairy, to 12 mm long, c. 4 mm wide. Ray florets deep red-brown tipped with bright yellow; ligules spathulate, c. 30 mm long, apex 3-toothed. Disc florets purple-black; corolla lobes c. 5 mm long, glandular-pubescent. Pappus c. 5 mm long, of 5 membranous scales tapered into minutely barbed awns.
Achenes not formed in Aust.
Flowering: late spring–summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Garden escape, rarely naturalized. Introduced from Eur.
