Description: Tufted perennial.
Culms slender, 20–45 cm high, 1–2 mm wide.
Leaves filiform and channelled or flat, erect, scabrous, about as long as culm; ligule narrow-papery with upper margin erose or minutely hairy; sheaths red-brown to very dark brown, dull. Inflorescence slender, erect, 20–60 cm long, with c. 8 nodes. Spikelets 2-flowered. Glumes 6–9, similar in size, long-mucronate, red-brown to dark grey-brown, scabrous at least on midrib. Stamens 3 or 4; anthers c. 1.3 mm long excluding appendage 0.2 mm long. Style 3-fid.
Nut oblong to narrow-ellipsoid, trigonous, 1.5–2.5 mm long, 0.8–1.0 mm diam., granulate, glistening, dark grey-brown.
Flowering: spring–summer.
Distribution and occurrence: In coastal areas south from Sydney, tablelands south from Glen Elgin and west to Rylstone area. Grows in sclerophyll forest and woodland in drier situations.
