Description: Deciduous shrub to small tree to 10 m high, with large, simple or branched (often divaricate) spines on younger branches and the stems of younger plants. Older trees usually unarrmed.
Leaves alternate, with lamina usually ovate to narrowly ovate, c. 5–14 cm long, 2–5 cm wide, ± glabrous or with minute hairs, glossy green above, margin entire or serrate to crenate; petiole to 8 mm long, pubescent or glabrescent.
Inflorescences axillary, racemose. Flowers white to greenish, to 7 mm diam., honey-scented, sepals (or tepals) 4 or 5, c. 2 mm long, ovate-triangular, with hairs. Male and female flowers on separate trees.
Drupe berry-like, indehiscent, subglobose, mostly 15–25 mm diam., pink to dark or brownish red or purple to (when mature) blackish, edible, style column persistent.
Distribution and occurrence: recorded from Mullumbimby; possibly naturalised. Flacourtia jangomas probably originated from tropical Asia, possibly India. Widely cultivated in SE and E Asia, Malesia and tropical Africa.
