Eragrostis lugens Nees APNI* Description: Tufted perennials to 40 cm high. Nodes 2–4, glabrous.
Sheaths glabrous; orifice with hairs to 2 mm long; ligule 0.3–0.5 mm long, membrabous below, ciliate above; blade folded, c. 1 mm wide.
Inflorescence open, to 15 cm long, 10 cm wide; axils of primary branches pilose with hairs 1–2 mm long. Spikelets dark red to purple, 3–6-flowered, 2.5–3 mm long. Glumes unequal; lower 0.6–0.7 mm long; upper glume 0.7–1 mm long. lemmas obtuse to acute, 1–1.2 mm long, lightly scaberulous, the lateral veins not redily discernable; margins membranous; palea c. 90% lemma length, 2-keeled, keels ciliolate. caryopsis almost trigonous, with a distinct groove tapering to an acute apex.
