Description: Slender, tufted annual or perennial to 0.7 m high, with somewhat knotty base; culms few-noded, usually much-branched, not disarticulating.
Leaves with blade convolute, to 3 mm wide, pubescent to glabrous.
Panicle spicate, 1–10 cm long, c. 1 cm wide (including awns); axillary inflorescences absent. Spikelets 3–6-flowered, 1 fertile. Glumes acute or acuminate, entire, muticous; lower 3–5 mm long, 9–15-nerved; upper 4–8.8 mm long, 7–11-nerved. Body of basal lemma 1.6–2.2 mm long, 9–11-nerved, nerves flattened or partly ribbed and often green; awns 2–9 mm long, plumose with fine long hairs in the lower 75%. Palea membranous. Lemma of second floret much smaller than the first and almost entirely embraced by it.
Flowering: during warmer months.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in open forest and woodland, often on red earths and in rock crevices.
