Description: Loosely tufted perennial to 0.5 m high, arising from a slender rhizome.
Leaves with sheath striate, glabrous or sparsely pubescent below, above ± retrorsely scaberulous or scabrid; ligule truncate, 0.5–1.5 mm long; blade 2–3 mm wide, hispid, pubescent or glabrescent, scaberulous or almost smooth.
Panicle erect, quite dense, oblong to oblong-ovate, 6–25 mm long, 6–12 mm wide (including awns). Spikelets linear-oblong or oblong, finally horizontally spreading, 2–3.5 mm long. Glumes acute or subobtuse, minutely pubescent to pubescent, keel ciliolate, hairs rigid, c. 0.6 mm long. Lemma subequal to glumes, finally indurated, 5–7-nerved, apex 2-toothed, teeth c. 0.3 mm long; callus minutely bearded; awn (or mucro) rigid, scaberulous, 1–3 mm long. Palea equal to lemma, keel smooth or scaberulous near apex.
Flowering: spring–summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in sclerophyll forest or grassland.
