Description: Erect annual to 1 m high.
Leaves with ligule absent; blade to 9 mm wide, mostly glabrous.
Panicle mostly 10–17 cm long, hanging to 1 side; lower racemes to 4 cm long. Spikelets mostly elliptic, 4–7 mm long, acuminate, awnless to strongly awned. Lower glume 30–50% length of spikelet, acute to acuminate, 3–5-nerved; upper subequal to fertile floret, acuminate, 5–7-nerved. Lower lemma similar in size and shape to spikelet, acuminate or with an awn to 5 cm long, 7-nerved. Fertile lemma broad-elliptic, 3.5–4.5 mm long, acute with a greenish tip, smooth, shining, yellowish to greyish, obscurely 5-nerved. Lower palea subequal to lower lemma. Upper palea subequal to fertile lemma, similar in texture.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Weed of rice-fields and irrigation channels and drains. Native of S Eur. to eastern Asia.
