Description: Erect shrub to 2 m high.
Leaves simple, broad-lanceolate to ovate, usually 3–6 cm long, 8–25 mm wide, apex acute, base attenuate to truncate, margins entire to sinuate, often folded lengthwise, glabrous; petiole 7.5–14 mm long.
Flowers in terminal panicles; pedicels mostly 3–6 mm long. Sepals 5, linear-lanceolate, 1.2–2.5 mm long, persistent. Stamens 6–10 mm long. Ovary glabrous.
Capsule 3-winged, greatly inflated, 16–30 mm long, rarely to 38 mm, 12–25 mm wide, rarely to 30 mm, glabrous; wings 1.5–4 mm wide, membranous.
Distribution and occurrence: in shrubland on sandy, stony skeletal soils on hills and ranges, widespread in arid and semi-arid rocky areas.
