Description: Loosely caespitose, erect or geniculate-ascending greyish pubescent perennial, to 0.6 m high, swollen at the base; culms and sheaths hairy, especially near the nodes, becoming glabrous upwards.
Leaves with ligule 2–3 mm long, margins jagged; blade 2–3 mm wide, with well-developed spicules on margins.
Peduncle much exserted at length, compressible. Racemes stiffly spreading at maturity, the lower in a whorl of 4 to 6 and to 30 cm long, bare at their bases for 4–11 cm, mostly unilaterally branched; the branches 3–12 cm long, bearing 3–13 paired or solitary spikelets. Spikelets 5–7 mm long. Lower glume 1–1.7 mm long, glabrous; upper glume 4.5–6.5 mm long, pubescent. Lower lemma 4.5–6 mm long, pubescent; upper lemma 4.5–5.5 mm long, acuminate, muricate.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in grassland on better soils.
