Description: Rhizomatous perennial to 0.9 m high.
Leaves with sheath glabrous; ligule 1–4 mm long; blade to 5.5 mm wide, glabrous or hairy.
Racemes 2–10, to 16 cm long, common axis 2–14 cm long, spikelets uniformly and densely arranged, mostly paired, the shorter pedicel c. 0.4 mm long, the longer c. 0.8 mm. Spikelets 1.3–1.8 mm long. Lower glume absent or a minute rim; upper 10–25% the length of the spikelet, nerveless, glabrous. Sterile lemma 1.1–1.6 mm long, subequalling the spikelet, 3–5-nerved, glabrous, occasionally with a few hairs. Fertile floret 1.2–1.7 mm long, slightly exceeding the sterile lemma, apiculate, at first pale, brown at maturity, minutely punctulate.
Flowering: winter.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in woodland on poor soils; along the Dumaresq R.
