Description: Stoloniferous annual or short-lived perennial to 0.7 m high.
Leaves with sheath glabrous or ± hairy; ligule 1–2 mm long; blade mostly 2–4 mm wide, glabrous or with a few hairs.
Racemes 2 or 3 or rarely more, 3–9 cm long, the spikelets borne in triplets on short pedicels and arranged in 2 apparent rows on 1 side of the rachis, the longer pedicels fused to the rachis for part of their length. Spikelets 1.3–1.8 mm long, pubescent with short hairs with warty walls. Lower glume absent or minute; upper almost equalling the spikelet, 3–7-nerved, pubescent between the nerves and on the margins. Sterile lemma equalling the spikelet, 7-nerved, the nerves ± obscured by the hairs between the nerves and on the margins. Fertile floret c. as long as the spikelet.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Widespread in diverse habitats.
