Description: Tufted erect perennial to 0.8 m high, swollen and densely hairy at the base.
Leaves with sheath densely woolly to pubescent; ligule to 2 mm long; blade 2–6 mm wide, densely pubescent on both surfaces.
Racemes spreading at maturity, to 25 cm long, bare at their bases for 3–11 cm, common axis to 20 cm long; spikelets remote on the upper parts of the racemes, usually in pairs, more rarely singly or in trios, the shorter pedicels c.0.5–4 mm long, the other 4–15 mm long. Spikelets mostly 4.5–5 mm long, the hairs spreading at maturity. Lower glume 15–35% as long as the spikelet, obscurely 3-nerved, a little remote from the upper glume; upper glume and lower lemma ± equal, 5–7-nerved, hairy, the hairs at first appressed, at length spreading, short, woolly, ± twisted. Fertile floret 3–5 mm long.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in grassland on better soils.
