Description: Tufted perennial to 0.8 m high; culms and nodes glabrous.
Leaves with sheath glabrous or scaberulous; ligule a membranous rim 0.7–1.5 mm long, one side usually with an auricular lobe 1.2–2.5 mm long; blade to 2.5 mm wide, lower surface scaberulous, upper surface sometimes smooth.
Panicle loose, open, 5–28 cm long, 1–3 cm wide; branches flexuous. Spikelets 3.5–4 mm long. Glumes unequal, lower glume 2.3–3.2 mm long; upper 2.8–4 mm long. Lemma 2.8–4 mm long (excluding awn), subterminally awned from 0.3–0.6 mm below a membranous 2-toothed tip, 5-nerved, glabrous except for the callus; awn 6.6–12 mm long, geniculate and strongly twisted at maturity; callus with crinkly hairs 0.2–1.2 mm long. Stamens 3.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in wet habitats in montane areas on sandy or granitic soil or in shale woodland in higher rainfall areas.
