Description: Slender, ascending, subglabrous perennial to 0.7 m high; culms c. 6-noded, geniculate at the lower nodes, the internodes exceeding the sheaths.
Leaves with sheath becoming loose from the culm, striate, somewhat scaberulous between the veins; ligule membranous, truncate, 2–3 mm long, smooth; blade 1–2 mm wide, grooved, scabrous on nerves.
Panicle loose or slightly contracted, few-flowered, lanceolate in outline, 3–20 cm long, with few, 1- or 2-nate branches bare in the lower part. Spikelets 3–3.5 mm long. Glumes rather narrow, acute or rather obtuse, unequal, 1-nerved, slightly keeled, gaping at maturity. Lemma 3–3.5 mm long, very slightly exceeding the glumes, lanceolate, truncate or obscurely toothed, scaberulous, 5-nerved; callus glabrous. Palea equal to lemma, 2-keeled, narrow, narrow-truncate at apex.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Usually grows in shaded habitats or by creeks.
