Description: Perennial with longish, thick rhizome.
Culms solitary, triquetrous, smooth or scabrous above, 30–100 cm high, c. 1.5 mm diam.
Leaves not septate-nodulose, lower mostly reduced to sheaths, upper usually with blade, as long as culms, 2–7 mm wide. Inflorescence head-like or with 2 or 3 branches to 2 cm long; digitate clusters globose, 6–20 mm diam.; involucral bracts leaf-like, 2 or 3 exceeding inflorescence. Spikelets flattened, 4–12 per cluster, 5–6 mm long, 1.5–2.5 mm wide in side view, 6–14-flowered; rachilla not winged, persistent. Glumes subacute, with thickly 2- or 3-nerved sides, c. 1.5 mm long, dark red-brown. Stamens 3. Style 3-fid.
Nut trigonous, ellipsoid, about as long as glume, c. 1.5 mm long, 0.8–1 mm diam., pale yellow-brown to grey-brown.
Flowering: spring–summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in rainforest; in coastal ranges and eastern edge of NT north from Manning R.
