Cyperus cyperoides (L.) Kuntze APNI* 
Description: Tufted perennial with short rhizome.
Culms triquetrous, smooth, swollen at base, 20–75 cm high, 1–3 mm diam.
Leaves not septate-nodulose, as long as culms or shorter, to 3.5 mm wide. Inflorescence usually simple, with 5–14 branches to 8 cm long; spikes cylindrical, 1.5–4 cm long, 6–10 mm diam., often covering half of the branch; involucral bracts leaf-like, 2–6 longer than inflorescence. Spikelets terete, numerous per spike, 1–3-flowered, mostly 1-flowered, with uppermost flower often male, 3–4 mm long, c. 0.5 mm wide; rachilla broadly winged; spikelet falling as unit. Glumes acute, with sides several-nerved, 3–3.5 mm long, whitish to pale brown, often yellow-tinged. Stamens 3. Style 3-fid.
Nut trigonous, very narrow-ellipsoid, half to two-thirds as long as glume, 1.7–2.3 mm long, c. 0.5 mm diam., mid to dark brown.
Flowering: spring–summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in woodland; scattered north from Sydney region.
